New WordPress Plugins by the Digital Lounge

Here at the Annenberg Digital Lounge, we don’t just offer support for WordPress sites – we use WordPress to power this site and contribute to the WordPress open source project. Today, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve released our first two free plugins on the official WordPress.org repository, complete with quirky DL-themed plugin icons.

The site icon widget plugin leverages the site icon feature added in WordPress 4.3 to easily display your personal logo in a widget area on your site (typically in your sidebar or footer). Check out our tutorial on Establishing Your Personal Brand with WordPress for more on site icons and using this plugin.

One of the issues we’ve seen on a lot of Annenberg students’ sites is that featured images aren’t always displayed on single post views. If you love your current theme but need to add the featured image on single views, simply activate the Featured Image in Content plugin and featured images will be added to the top of your content for all posts.

You can download both plugins directly from WordPress.org, or search for and install them in your WordPress admin by going to Plugins -> Add New.

More Plugins

As we continue developing more plugins and publishing them, check out our profile page on WordPress.org to see all of our plugins. I’ve also developed numerous plugins before joining the digital lounge; you can check those out on my profile.

Our next planned plugin for public release is the “Tutorials” custom post type that powers the tutorials on our site here. (We’re also thinking about publishing the theme that we developed for this DL 2.0 site).

If you have any ideas for plugins you’d like to see us develop, please let us know! We’re happy to explore ways that we can help both Annenberg students, faculty and staff, and the broader WordPress community by continuing to develop free, open-source plugins like these.
