Computer Science Added to STEM Education Act

Taylor Winchell

On Oct. 1, Congress passed the STEM Education Act through a bipartisan effort. This is huge news for students across the country, as the act’s biggest change is adding a computer science component to their existing federal programs.

As the first real acknowledgment from Congress on the importance of coding and other computer science in STEM education, this is a huge step toward expanding digital literacy to our future leaders.

“75% of American schools don’t even offer computer science,” according to Cameron Wilson, VP of Government Affairs at Code.org. “But we’re closer to giving every student the chance to learn how our world works and prepare for 21st-century careers.”

Unfortunately, many current USC students did not receive the kind of built-in computer science education that–thanks to this new act–future students will now benefit from. That is why the Annenberg Digital Lounge is committed to bringing the latest digital products and news to all students, including our current Adobe certification courses and upcoming coding workshops.

So “like” our Facebook page to stay updated on our latest events, and stop by the lounge at ANN301 for any computer questions you may have or just to hang out. We’re here to help YOU prepare for and succeed in 21-century careers–so we’ll see you soon!
